beast. and dana milbank, columnist for "the washington post." thanks to you both for coming on tonight. dana, are zingers the answer for mitt romney? >> well, he has to beware the very perilous boomerang zinger. delivering in sort of the wrong way, then it looks canned, it looks contrived and that you're trying too hard. if he comes out and says, there you go again, you're going to hear a thumping sound and that's going to be me and everybody else pounding our heads on the table in the next room in the debate. he's wooden and stiff as it is. if he's seen as throwing down a line, that's much worse than skipping the zingers at all. i would just try to have an actual debate. >> michelle, it's pretty bad when you use a zinger and it doesn't even work but, to be honest, mitt romney's been talking and dealing with zingers for a long time. let me show you something about mitt romney and zingers going back a little bit. >> coming up with the best answers for the best zingers. and number two is being able to communicate to the people of america that you're a leader. i think i have the best idea

[ baby crying ] >> caller: yes. babies born through in vitro he wants to outlaw. i think -- >> stephanie: obama makes babies cry. >> caller: oh, please, if he slams him on that, there's nothing worse for you than just scorned women. i tell ya. >> stephanie: the funny thing is if you've seen any pictures from any campaign stop anywhere, mitt romney makes babies cry. ever seen babies around obama? >> caller: he can't really hold them. there is a nurturing way to hold a child. he is just very uncomfortable in any situation. >> stephanie
the bright lights of the debate stage, heralding president obama's talents at going this. i'm curious dana, do you think chris christie went off script earlier today, when he said, come thursday morning, we're going to be talking about the outstanding job that mitt rom y romney. he's supposed to be saying my guy has a speech impediment. >> here comes the comical that reed was talking about. he has to come out attacking and trying to dislodge obama. >> did he emerge from any one of them as a clear winner, dana? >> there wasn't any -- he was solid, but with a couple of exceptions, but in each one you would say he won on points. there was no knockout, he was very skilled at that, but that's not to say that obama isn't. i don't think either of them is sort of the classic college debater. but they're both very capable. i'm going out to denver and getting some popcorn and enjoy the show. >> president obama is meeting with seniors and he's talking about medicare. >> mid romney said at the time were he president in this past, he would sign it into law. sign into law the requirement you all come u

wednesday night in denver. kate baldwin is here and dana bash and first correspondent jessica yellin. how's the president, jessica, preparing for this big night 48 hours or so from now? >> wolf, he's flown out to henderson, nevada, where he's mostly hunkered down. he's out there some of his top strategists for three days of intensive debate prep. i caught up with senator john kerry. he's the man who's playing mitt romney in the mock debates and he helped explain why the president had to leave washington, d.c. to get ready for wednesday's rumble. >> well, the president's the president. he was at the u.n. giving two major speeches. he's been dealing with all sorts of international business, domestic business. he is at the white house a lot of the time preparing and i can tell you that his -- they have had to cancel times when he might or might not have been able to do preparation. it's my understanding mitt romney spent four or five days secluded somewhere. had five debates in 24 hours or 48 hours. and has senator portman with him every day on the airplane practicing. i'm here. i'm not trav

in the polls. so senior congressional correspondent dana bash, she's joining me now and, dana, let's talk missouri here. because what we have told the todd akin, claire mccaskill story in the past, but given what he said, not necessarily an easy win for republicans now. >> that's right. it has been such a roller coaster for republicans, brooke. they went into this race months ago thinking that democrat claire mccaskill was so vulnerable that they were sure to win this seat. it was complicated by todd akin as you said, we talked about it a lot in this program. but the gist of what he said, which was so controversial, a woman's body has the ability to shut down pregnancy from rape. it can refuse to step aside, of course, and republicans who hammered him, begged him to get out of the race, are now in an uncomfortable position of having to eat crow. saying, well, he's better than the democrat. roy blunt, the current sitting senator from missouri. >> i think that anybody else would have been a candidate that clearly would have won and todd very well may win. he's on a ticket, at a time when pe
have been holed up for days now to practice. dana bash has been working her sources. you've been hearing in terms of the romney debate preparations, they've gotten intense. >> they have. in fact, i was told they had their high volta mock debate prep sessions until just two days ago. for the past couple of days, they took it down several notches. it was all about fine tuning in a more relaxed setting in romney's hotel room. romney's so tag, tweeted a picture of what he called the brain trust meeting. a source tells us they worked hard on trimming his answers on critical issues so he would come through with a quote, single sentence to capture something important. cnn has learned that mitt romney's mock debate sessions are two and a half hours long. an hour more than the actual debate will last. the reason, romney sources say debate prep is so intense, his aides carve out breaks for him to decompress with his family. moderator jim lehrer is with long time adviser, peter flaherty. at the opposing podium, president obama is played by rob portman, who spoke exclusively to cnn. >> you h
